  • Cedar Rapids – the town, not the movie

Today had its small challenges, but it was all around a good day – with Cedar Rapids as a somewhat surprising highlight. Cedar Rapids – The City of Five Seasons. Not quite sure what that means exactly, but apparently years ago locals re-dubbed it The City of Five Smells. Quaker Oats is based in Cedar

  • A little check in just so you know we’re still alive.

(Riceville – Cedar Falls, Iowa – check out the Maps page to follow our progress or Diana’s Strava feed for more on our route – though I don’t necessarily advise following it exactly – more on that tomorrow . . .) We are. Barely. Or, at least, I’m barely still alive.  Diana? Of course she’s

Good bike path (that is, not some annoying cobbled together thing like yesterday’s trip to Hastings) into Rochester.  But

  • A Dark Cloud On Our First Day . . .

Quite a day . . . Brought the dog for a walk. Made pancakes for my Mom and Dad, Ellie, her roommates, and Diana.  Packed up. Forgot my gloves – which comes into play later. Said goodbye to my parents, Ellie, her boyfriend, Jacob, and her roommates, Lauren (via FaceTime or something), and a bunch

  • Leaving on a jet plane . . .

Don’t know when [we’ll] be back again. (If you don’t know that song you’re clearly from another generation. You can still be here, but you’re suspect. Suspect I tell you . . .) Okay – so we’re planning to leave tomorrow (Friday). Like, really leave . . . If you want to help see us

And you thought it couldn’t it get any worse . . . I guess it can always be worse . . . You know what is worse than one tick-borne illness? Two tick-borne illnesses.  I went in to see Dr. Swank on Friday. This was supposed to be a follow up visit – just to

  • Tune-up Ride Report: Preparing for the Big Adventure

Diana and I embark on a prep ride for the big trip. The ride revealed a few issues – mostly around my fitness. A little miscalculation leads to setting up camp twice, but we emerge better off for it and we are looking forward to our upcoming adventures.
